"Isn't it morbid to spend your time thinking about death all the time?" It's a common question. And my surprising answer? No! In fact, I find walking clients through the process of planning for the not-so-surprise-ending for all of us incredibly life-affirming and freeing!
That's because creating an estate plan - whether that's through a will, trust, beneficiary designations, life-time gifting, or other planning mechanisms - is an incredible gift. Not only for your loved ones, but also for yourself. No more worrying about what will happen when you're gone - instead, you can focus your energy on how you'll live your one wild and precious life now, as Mary Oliver asks us to consider.
Can I tell you a secret? There is no one 'right' way to plan. Oh, there are pros and cons to each type of plan, but no one can decide the right plan for you - except YOU. I'm happy to share the implications of your plan - financial, ease of administration, and the potential impact on (and between!) your loved ones. But ultimately, the choice is yours. Plenty of people will give your their (perhaps well-meaning) opinion, but I will not judge what can be among the most intimate and personal of decisions.
So, if you're curious about a variety of estate planning and probate options - from basic differences between a will and a trust, to more quirky options such as human composting or so-called air funerals - check back here each week to learn more.
Or better yet, give me a call, or send me a message through the Contact page. I look forward to hearing from you!
